Facial nerve palsy is caused by damage to the seventh cranial nerve, which controls the muscles responsible for facial expression. When this nerve is affected, patients experience facial weakness or full facial paralysis on the affected side, often including the inability to fully close the upper eyelid or lower eyelid. Bell’s palsy is the most common form, typically caused by inflammation linked to viral infection. Other causes include Ramsay Hunt syndrome, Lyme disease, and trauma.
When eyelid closure is incomplete, the eye’s surface is left exposed, increasing the risk of dryness, irritation, and corneal damage. Many patients recover with supportive care, but others develop lasting facial asymmetry or muscle weakness that benefits from surgical intervention.
Surgical Procedures We Offer
Visionary Eye Doctors provides a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments for facial paralysis patients, including:
- Eyelid Weight Implants: Placement of a gold weight or platinum weight in the upper eyelid to assist with eye closure when the eyelid cannot fully close due to facial nerve weakness.
- Ectropion Repair: Surgical correction of an outward-turning lower eyelid caused by facial muscle weakness.
- Eyelid Surgery: Reconstructive procedures, including lower lid tightening, are designed to improve eyelid closure and restore function for patients with ongoing symptoms following Bell’s palsy or other facial nerve disorders.
- Brow Lift: Elevation of a drooping brow caused by facial nerve palsy to restore facial symmetry and improve the field of vision.
- Botox Injections: Targeted botulinum toxin injections to relax overactive muscles on the unaffected side and improve facial balance.
