LASIK Surgery for Vision Without Eyeglasses or Contacts
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most frequently performed elective vision correction surgery in North America. This highly effective outpatient procedure is often referred to as refractive surgery or laser vision correction. LASIK eye surgery is used to correct the following vision problems:
When performed by an experienced surgeon, LASIK surgery can lead to remarkable vision correction results, greatly reducing or completely eliminating patients’ dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses.
How LASIK Eye Surgery Works
The LASIK procedure is performed by an ophthalmologist, a medical eye doctor who specializes in surgical treatments of the eye. Anesthetic eye drops are applied to the eye and the LASIK surgeon creates a protective flap to access the inner corneal tissue. Next the inner layers of the cornea receive computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light. The laser light gently reshapes the inner corneal layer to improve and in many cases, eliminate the need for prescription. Following the reshaping of the tissue, the LASIK surgeon carefully repositions and aligns the flap to its original position. Protective shields are placed over the eye to prevent accidental rubbing as the flap heals naturally and securely over the next several hours.

LASIK Eye Surgery Candidates
The best candidates for LASIK surgery are individuals over the age of 18 whose eyeglasses prescription has changed minimally for one to two years. Those whose corneas are too thin may not be good candidates for LASIK surgery but will most likely qualify for alternative vision correction surgery such as PRK, also performed by an eye doctor at Visionary Eye Doctors . Your candidacy can only be determined during an eye exam with our LASIK ophthalmologist surgeons.
