The American Optometric Association recommends eye exams for children from an early age: babies between 6 and 12 months and children 3 to 5 years old. Eye Disorders That Affect Children

Common pediatric eye problems include the following:

Astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness are refractive errors caused by abnormalities in the eye’s surface. These are the most common visual acuity issues in children and adults.
Amblyopia, commonly referred to as lazy eye, is a disorder that causes the visual brain to function abnormally, leading to abnormal vision in one or both eyes. If diagnosed early, amblyopia can respond well to treatment, which may include wearing an eye patch on the affected eye.

Cortical visual impairment is vision loss due to any abnormality of the visual center in the brain. The eyes are normal, but the optical interpretation center in the brain does not function properly and prevents normal vision.
Nystagmus is an uncontrolled and rhythmic oscillation of the eyes. It can be a condition present at birth or show up later.
Pediatric cataracts are a cloudiness or opacification eye’s lens. Cataracts are typically seen in senior adults, but children can be born with them or develop them in early childhood. Symptoms include misalignment of the eye or a white spot present in the pupil.
Childhood glaucoma signifies high pressure in the eye, which can cause damage to the optic nerve and permanent vision loss. This is a rare condition, but symptoms include cloudy corneas, eye-watering, repeated blinking, sensitivity to light, and eye redness.
Pediatric ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelid. Babies can be born with it or develop it later in life. This can lead to amblyopia and ultimately vision loss if untreated.
